Shiva Nataraja, Hindu Lord of Dance
One of my students recently asked me what "Bollywood" meant. I explained that it is the name of the Hindi film industry that also applies to the style of music and dance that is seen in these films. The term is derived from a combination of the name of its birthplace "Bombay", which is present-day Mumbai, and the American equivalent of "Hollywood." Its origins are from the 1930s.
Bollywood is a dance form created by incorporating several styles such as classical Indian, Belly Dance, jazz, hip-hop, and Bhangra. Bhangra (pronounced Bungra) is a lively form of music and dance that originated in the Punjabi region of Northern India. Bhangra and Bollywood dance provide a fun and energetic cardio workout and are great mood enhancers!
